Why yes, yes they are. Because they are not stairs, "they" are an escalator. Stairs? They are solid. Not movable. You must use physical energy to ascend them. I am so sorry, I know you thought your bookstore journey would start with a large frappuccino which you would then meander about with. The broken escalator certainly throws a wrench into that fantasy!
